Interesting food for thought for the job-seekers out there:
In order to get a job, you have to be creative, attract jobs to your website, and network constantly. Applying to job postings, in newspapers and online, won’t get you anywhere and is becoming completely ineffective.
I wouldn’t agree that applying to job postings is “completely ineffective,” but I do think that things are changing rapidly - I didn’t get either of my last two professional jobs by applying to job postings, because the job descriptions weren’t posted anywhere. I wasn’t psychic, but I was fairly aggressive about contacting companies that I thought I wanted to work for.
I can’t say for sure whether my “online presence” did anything for me, though. And the thought of an employer seeing my facebook profile or twitter feed makes me very uncomfortable: I try to keep those as locked down as possible. Perhaps it’s time to clean them up and share them with the world?
